Today after reading about Zinio in NSLog(); I wanted to have a look into the free peek of Mac Developer Journal. And in fact I didn't even read the articles because the Zinio Reader is this horrible. It is about the most horrible thing you could have done. I totally agree with Erik's points. Having a magazine in a digital format has enough inherent disadvantages. If something like this wants to succeed and actually compete then it has to have the perfect reading application. Zinio doesn't, it did the opposite. Stay away from it.
BTW: The bastard took the liberty to put a "Magazines" Folder into my home. That's one of the worst things you can do on my Mac. If you do an automatically created folder, put it under one of the Apple standard one's, and do so only if you absolutely have to!
Shite.
Everyone seems to be faster to complain about Zinio than me. I already made a list of complains two days ago:
- Crippling Printing (1 page a time) means penalizing buyers
- ~/Magazines (MUST. SHOOT. SOMEBODY.)
- Flash adverts? You gotta be kidding.
- No antialiasing in reader
- Installer does not seem to do anything for a looong time.
- Installs a login item (Thank god it's no kext...)
- Hillarious Uninstall instructions (Search for Zinio and Content Guard in Finder)
- Printing messes up kerning. (WTF?)
I totally agree with you.
Now I can not get rid of it from my system.
If you know how-to, please share that to everyone.
really nice blog! i appreciate!
Posted by: phentermine at 18.02.04 22:29Beats me.......... I have no problems with the reader at all on the pc, and i find myself paying $4 .oo for UK mags i use to pay over $13 each.
Posted by: Bob at 17.04.04 21:15HELP!!! I can't get rid of this stupid thing!!! Someone put it on my computer to read a magazine and now I can't uninstall it through Zinio or through my control panel. If anyone knows how to uninstall this please share with me!!!
Posted by: Amanda at 04.07.04 20:39I was having the same problem with uninstalling Zinio. I found out that my problem was when I went to use the uninstall feature under the Start menu, it looked as if it were preparing to install the program again. Even though it says it is setting it up, it is actually preparing to uninstall it, so allow it to access the internet and answer yes to its prompts.
Hope this helps.
Posted by: Steve at 06.07.04 22:45Allow it to access the internet? It can't seem to do that. Doesn't matter if I use IE or Netscape (which it REALLY doesn't like), and understand that I have "always on DSL", it can't seem to know that I'm connected. It can't give me magazines because it's "not connected to the internet" even though it is. It can't uninstall because it's "not connected to the internet" and when I tried to go to the website, the website isnt' there either! So now how do I get this thing off?
Posted by: Martha at 31.07.04 16:02I managed to get zinio to uninstall by temporarily disable my firewall.
Crap software....
I have been trying to uninstall zinio and get a message "setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I also temporarily disabled the firewall, but still no luck. Please help!

The one trick to un-installing is that you do need to have Internet connectivity for it to work properly. The un-installer located at 'Start Menu -> Programs -> Zinio -> Uninstall Zinio Reader' should work.
If you do have connectivity and are still experiencing problems, you can always manually un-install by following these steps:
1) Close the Zinio Reader "if open".
2) Right click on "Zinio Delivery Manager" in the far right lower corner of the Windows system tray and select "exit". Select "Yes" to exit.
3) Delete the "Zinio" folder in your "C:\Program Files\Zinio\".
4) Select Start/Run and type "cmd". Move to the "C:\" directory if you are not already there. Type "cd.." until you are at "c:\". Then type "cd pro*". Then type "cd com*". Then type "cd z*". The command line should now look like "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Zinio". Type ""regsvr32 -u zshext.dll" A dialog will pop up stating "zshext.dll was successfully unregistered". Reboot. After reboot, open Windows explorer and navigate to "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Zinio". Select the "Zinio" folder and delete.
5)Delete "My Magazines" folder within the "My Documents" folder.
6)Delete the "Digital Magazines" shortcut on the desktop.
7) Delete the "Zinio Reader" shortcut on the desktop.
8) Delete the Zinio Program group. Select "Start/Programs/Zinio. Right click on "Zinio" and select delete.
9) Delete the Zinio shortcut form the Start menu. Select Start and locate the Zinio icon. Right click on icon and select delete.
10) Go to C:\Documents and Settings\'username'\Application Data and delete the "ContentGuard" folder.
11) Delete the "ZinioInstall.txt" file on C:\.
12) Select Start/Run and enter "regedit" to open the Windows Registry. Select "Edit" then "Find". Do a search for Zinio. Keep selecting the "F3" key and deleting Zinio until there are no more instances of Zinio found in the Registry.
13) Delete all files in "Recycle Bin".
14) Reboot.
Please let us know if we may be of any further assistance.
Thank You

In case someone is still reading this.
I managed to uninstall Zinio by disactivating all firewalls including the Windows XP Firewall, done that the uninstall feature in the zinio folder worked properly. I will track the registry for Zinio to erase all entries referring to it.
Good luck and if you read this DON'T install Zinio at least until they change their UNINSTALL feature.
