Kunden? Sind die wichtig?

Da geh ich letztens in Kino und sehe dieses schöne Plakat hängen. Geht's noch?
Der Schockwellenreiter verlinkt dazu einen schönen Artikel von futurezone.orf. Besonders empfehlenswert der Absatz "Der Schuss könnte nach hinten losgehen".
Ich gehe seit Jahren ca. 1-2 mal pro Woche ins Kino, und kaufe mir ca. 1 DVD pro Monat. Nur damit ich mir ständig solche Unverschämtheiten bieten lassen muss?
Auf der zugehörigen Website, www.hartabergerecht.de muss ich aussagelose Zahlen wie "30,3 Millionen Spielfilme wurden in Deutschland von Januar bis August auf CD bzw. DVD gebrannt" lesen. Darunter fallen wohl auch die legalen Aufnahmen vom Fernsehen, die viele meine Freunde machen, oder? Ist aber nicht so wichtig.
"Ca. 800 Millionen Euro - so hoch ist der jährliche Schaden durch Raubkopien im Bereich Film allein in Deutschland." - mich würde interessieren wie diese Zahl zustande kommt. Ohne sinnfreie Annahmen wie "jeder, der einen Film kopiert hat, hätte ihn auch gekauft", oder ähnliches wird wohl auch diese Erhebung nicht ausgekommen sein. Traue keiner Statistik, die du nicht selbst gefälscht hast.

Die Fragen und Antworten sind der reine Hohn. Ein Beispiel: "Glauben Sie wirklich, dass Ihre Kampagne Raubkopierer abschreckt?"

Weiter zu den Zielen/Strategien:
Wie wäre es mal mit "6. Ausbau des Kinoerlebnisses / Positive Kundenbindung?"...

Nett auch im "Wir über uns":
... Die ZKM wurde ins Leben gerufen, um Branchenkampagnen zur Erhöhung des Filmbesuchs in Deutschland zu entwickeln ...
Gute Idee. Ich seh mich schon in viel mehr Filme gehen, dank dieser Kampagne.
Und es kommt noch dicker, dieser Schund ist auch noch von der Filmförderungsanstalt gefördert:
"Die Kampagne wird gefördert mit Mitteln der Filmförderungsanstalt FFA."
Klasse. Auf deren Website kann man sich informieren, (->Profil) wie die sich finanzieren. BTW, die oben zitierte "Brennerstudie" ist von der FFA und kann dort auch eingesehen werden.
Wieviel Geld diese Kampagne wohl gekostet hat? Leider finde ich das nirgends...
Naja, wenigstens laufen in einigen Kinos auch Spots gegen die FFA und die Erhöhung der Abgaben.

Update: yauh bringt Licht ins Dunkel: Raubkopierer sind laut §12 Abs. 1 StGB keine Verbrecher.

Update 2: 3DCenter nimmt u.a. die 800 Millionen Schaden auseinander.

Die Österreichische Seite Internet 4 Jurists titelt mit dem immer bedenlicher werdenden "Schock and Awe"-Feldzug der Musik und Filmindustrie - kollektive Verleumdung als letztes Aufgebot?
wirres.net setzt die Kernaussage "Raubkopierer sind verbrecher" in den richtigen Kontext.
Ausserdem hab ich gerade nochmal in der NETZZEITUNG gelesen, dass die Kampagne auf 2 Jahre angelegt ist. Bitte macht dem ein Ende.

Kossmann is gone....

Mit Entsetzen musste ich gestern realisieren, dass der beste Professor der TUM Informatik schon seit dem Sommersemester 2003 gegangen ist.
Dr. Donald Kossmann dessen exzellente Vorlesungen Datenbanken II und XML-basierte Informationssysteme ich hören durfte, hat nun einen eigenen Lehrstuhl an der Uni Heidelberg.
Wieder einmal bewegt sich die TUM Informatik einen Schritt weg vom angestrebten "ExcellenTUM".

RendezCon v0.1

After playing around with the Controller Layer I decided to do some evalution. You can find the outcome here: RendezCon.dmg.

It's sample code and an actual complete Application for browsing rendezvous. It's Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) only, as it is using the Controller Layer.

The distribution is binary and source under BSD-Licence. Please review the code and comment here on it. I want this to be good sample code for Controller and Rendezvous usage and will maintain it.

TUM - Mathematik/Informatik

Heute wollte ich mal wieder essen. Ein garnicht so unwahrscheinliches Vorhaben in einem Gebäude in dem Mittagessen angeboten wird. Möchte man meinen. Entsprechend viele Sitzplätze in die Magistrale zu stellen wäre ja wirklich zuviel verlangt gewesen. Also gilt es die Stoßzeiten zu meiden. Insofern ist essen eh nur vor 11:40 oder wieder nach 12:45 möglich, wenn man sitzen möchte.

Also essen um 13:10, mit Sitzplatz. Und dann das Bild: Die Bänke sind teilweise so gebaut, dass man mit den beinen von der Seite nicht reinkommt. (Auf dem Bild ist mein Fuß zu sehen, der sich versucht durch die Lücke zwischen Bank und Tisch zu zwängen, erfolglos). Wären wir jetzt in Amerika würde ich bestimmt irgendjemanden verklagen können.

BTW: Diese "Qualität" von Bild macht das Nokia3650. Jippie.

So Viewtiful!

Heute hatte ich meinen ersten Kontakt mit Viewtiful Joe für die Gamecube.
Ein Wahnsinn. Das Spiel ist ein absolutes MUSS. Ähnlich begeistern konnte mich nur das erste Crash Bandicoot Spiel für die Playstation damals. Die Steuerung ist astrein 2D, das Spiel aber nicht. Cell-Shading und Stimmung vom Feinsten. Hinzu kommt ein einzigartiges Spielkonzept mit "Bullet-Time", Zeitraffer und noch mehr Wahnsinn.
Muss Kaufen Jetzt.

How premature? No not at all. Sexually is not and never can be premature. I'm delighted to live in a time and country where everybody is allowed to do what s/he wants to and can talk about this stuff without having to be afraid about getting thrown out of society. And of course the thing about freedom is you always have the freedom not to.
So my answer: It doesn't matter how many are doing it, it's about having the freedom to do or not do it.

"Panther Problems"

Lately I've read a lot about Panther problems. Many developers deliver "Panther ready/compatible/compliant" versions. So do we with SubEthaEdit 1.1.5.
I'd like to comment on the subject because some of the conclusions you could draw because of this fact.
It turned out that most of the crashes we got with SubEthaEdit were due to bad things we did, that jaguar tolerated. E.g. in one place we did some memory-mismanagement. We made a chain of callbacks, which at the top level released the object, that initiated the chain. As we found this out we were astonished why this didn't crash on Jaguar.
After having dealt with many other Panther related issues now my impression is the following:
Panther is not at all particulary buggy. Panther is more streamlined, optimized and strict. If you programmed things not according to documentation and specification, but according to you trial and error tests, then the probability of problems on panther with your application is quite high. But of course this is not a good programming style.
The one thing you can accuse Apple of, is not telling their developers that Panther will be more strict. That would have helped. In our case we would have nailed down the crash earlier (because we would have known it is not due to the beta of Panther).
I personally am very pleased about the development speed and quality that Mac OS X is keeping up, if not even increasing. IMHO as a user and developer I'm looking forward to a very bright future.

Film- und Musikindustrie

Wann kapieren die es endlich? Ich war gestern wieder im Kino, und musste mich wieder wegen "Film-Piraterie" beschuldigen lassen. Hallo. Ich sitze im Kino. Ich habe gezahlt. Wenn das so weiter geht habe ich bald keinen Bock mehr. Ich hab schon aufgehört CD's zu kaufen, seit die mit "Kopierschutz" ausgeliefert werden. Wenn das in den Kinos so weiter geht, dann sehe ich da für mich auch Schwarz.

Dieses rumgeheule wegen "Piraterie". Ich hab noch keine Industrie gesehen, die an "Piraterie" zugrunde gegangen ist.

Beispiel Software: Windows + Co. Warum diese Verbreitung und diese Monopolstellung? Nicht zuletzt deswegen, weil 80% der Benutzer keine gekaufte Kopie haben. Und ganz schlau, jetzt wird von einem Schaden gesprochen, der diesen 80% entspricht. Milchmädchen sage ich da nur. Bei absolut strikter Kontrolle wäre die Verbreitung nie so groß geworden, und infolgedessen auch der Markt insgesamt kleiner. Zu diesem Argumentationsstrang könnte ich noch tagelang weiterschreiben, aber die Kurve:

Filmindustrie: ich kenne keinen, der seitdem er Filme auch mal übers Internet bekommt weniger DVDs kauft oder weniger ins Kino geht. Keinen. Sollte sich die Filmindustrie allerdings darauf einlassen und Ihre Kunden genauso vergraulen, wie es die Musikindustrie schon getan hat, dann könnte das durchaus so werden. Man bekämpft "Piraterie" nicht mit Restriktionen für alle, sondern mit einem Konkurrenzfähigen Produkt. Das Kino ist Konkurrenzfähig: große Leinwand, brillianter Sound, entsprechendes Ambiente, etc. Bei DVDs und CDs: geile Cover, bessere Preise und sonstige Add-Ons. Und vor allem: Kein Kopierschutz! Ich zahle doch nicht für eine CD, die ich dann nicht mal auf meinem iPod hören darf. Wo kommen wir denn da hin?

Zu guterletzt ein Blog, dass sich ständig mit diesen Themen auseinanderesetzt: Mix, Burn & RIP. In diesem Sinne noch einen schönen Sonntag allerseits.

Interessant war allerdings, das Konrad Zuse auf den Platz 15 gewählt wurde. Mir war nicht bewußt dass soviele nicht Geeks was mit dessen name verbinden.

Zinio - Crap

Today after reading about Zinio in NSLog(); I wanted to have a look into the free peek of Mac Developer Journal. And in fact I didn't even read the articles because the Zinio Reader is this horrible. It is about the most horrible thing you could have done. I totally agree with Erik's points. Having a magazine in a digital format has enough inherent disadvantages. If something like this wants to succeed and actually compete then it has to have the perfect reading application. Zinio doesn't, it did the opposite. Stay away from it.

BTW: The bastard took the liberty to put a "Magazines" Folder into my home. That's one of the worst things you can do on my Mac. If you do an automatically created folder, put it under one of the Apple standard one's, and do so only if you absolutely have to!

Matrix Revolutions

Der Film gibt Antworten, nicht allzuviele aber zumindest ein paar.
An die Stelle der sehr gut gemachten Martial Arts Kämpfe der ersten beiden Teile treten diesmal Materialschlachten ausshalb der Matrix. Und genau diese empfinde ich leider als schlecht gemacht. Innerhalb der Matrix müssen die Kämpfe nicht realistisch sein, das ist ja ein Vorteil der Story. Ausserhalb der Matrix jedoch sollten die Kampfverläufe schon stimmig und nicht zu hanebüchen sein.

Ein besonderes Augemerk verdient der Kampf von Smith und Neo. Dieser könnte direkt der Schlusskampf einer Final Fantasy Serie sein. Hier wurde der bisherige Kampfstil mal etwas gebrochen.

Inhaltlich halte ich ihn für ganz gut, aber die Umsetzung ist leider etwas lieblos. Die erste Matrix brillierte durch seine Story und Stimmung. Den zweiten fand ich auch sehr gut, hier traten die genial choreographierten Action/Kampfszenen in den Vordergrund. Bei der Animatrix war jeder Kurzfilm ein Kunstwerk an sich, welches durch das verweben in den Matrix-Handlungsstrang noch an Tiefe gewann. Der dritte Film hat leider abgesehen davon, dass er die Storyline zuende bringt, keine Besonderheit, wirklich keine.

Why PHP sucks, Part I

I worked quite some time with PHP now, starting with PHP 3.0. My first impression was: hey cool, simple and effective.
How wrong could I be. To be honest, it's a big heap of crap. It's convenient for small little things, but please don't use it for big projects. I feel very sorry about that it got so much attention and praise. It really sucks.

To prove my point, I will start this column today with another reference to joelonsoftware. The article has a nice bit about Unicode and encodings, please do read it.

Having read more of joelonsoftware I realized that he really is a great supporter of microsoft's crappy software. If the reader is able to overlook that fact then most of his articles are really a recommendation.

Albeit quoting and praising joelonsoftware, after having a look at the homepage of FogBUGZ and reading the markting material, I can't help thinking that it's not a great tool. What I can say is, that working with JIRA in the development of SubEthaEdit really is a pleasing experience. It's definetly my recommendation when it comes to bug-tracking.

Wax On, Wax Off - Auftragen, Polieren

I recently discoverd Joel Spolsky's Blog [via NSLog();] and it has some very enlightening articles.

This one really speaks from the bottom of my programmers heart. CS in Munich's TUM really has the same problem. Programmers aren't in touch with low level stuff anymore. Abstraction is a good thing, but before you abstract, you have to know what exactly your basic lego building blocks are.

Und für die deutschen Leser existiert auch eine Übersetzung des Artikels. Die TUM zieht eine Generation von Programmierern, nein Informatikern (Programmieren können die nämlich nicht mehr) heran die nicht einmal in Ihrer Ausbildung ein wirklich abgeschlossenes Projekt vorweisen müssen und nichts können ausser halbgaren Pseudocode produzieren und UML-Diagramme von ach so tollen Objekt-Abstraktions-Struktur-Bäumen zeichnen. Wer soll die brauchen? Und warum?

Safari 1.1 Serious Memory Leak

In the progress of processing Bugs in SubEthaEdit I found out a serious memory leak in the WebKit/Safari.

E.g. this blog triggers it (actually that was how I reproduced the leak accidentally while designing the layout of this blog in SubEthaEdit), but I put the gist into leak01.html

Just load the page, open up a terminal with top, watch RPRVT of Safari, then press reload often. Memory rises quite quickly. It apparently has to do with background-images that are assigned via css. Looking into it with MallocDebug showed that an awful lot of Memory gets allocated while redrawing and generating the corresponding Pattern. Hope this helps.

Application Exposé

I actually filed this behavior as bug. I absolutely hate Apple's position on how to respect my ordering of the windows. They simply don't care. Instead of making the Finder "user-centric" they should make the UI "window-centric". It's annoying enough that you cant put input focus into a window that is not on top in the window stack, but to order all of the Applications' windows in front whenever they think it's appropriate is just horrible.

I was really looking forward that to the solutions that exposé has for navigation. I consider myself as a power user, and therefore I often work with many many windows per App. And often there are 2 Apps involved in my workflow and even more often only 2 or so of their windows are in my current work focus. Neither exposé nor application wide exposé offers a solution here. Although Application exposé without this ordering behaviour would have been the solution (Workflow: Applications exposé, tab, click on window). The only way of switching between these 2 Apps is to click on one each others window. Command-tab brings every window of the other app in front, obscuring the windows I worked. Another task that I often perform is bringing only one specific window of my current up in front. Here Application exposé would have been perfect. But sadly every single window of my app is brought in front, obscuring all my nice other applications that are part of my current workflow. Sadly this way quite useless, and I have to stick with the windows menu of my current app, and search my windows via window-title-text instead of doing it visually.

I want to work with my Mac and use many applications at once. Switching between them definitely shouldn't be as hard and annoying as it is now.

After this rant I feel obliged to say, that Mac OS X and it's UI are still far superior to the mainstream-alternatives. Windows and Linux are doing a by far lousier job in delivering a consistent and useful UI. In fact the only OS that really allows working with many applications without standing in your way is still Risc OS, but it sadly hasn't put up with the pace of current OSes and has many shortcomings in other areas nowadays.

And it happened again. I'm unsettled.
Just as I pressed recompile Xcode showed me errors in the headers of the SDK on my disk. This happened already about a week ago. As it turned out again there were just some subtle exchanged chars:

The last time the errors were "unsagned" and "wnsigned".

Show Active Screen Corners

A nice hidden feature in 10.3 which I found out. With
defaults write com.apple.dock wvous-showcorners -bool true
you can make the dock show the active screen corners like this:

Of course you have to killall Dock or logout and in again for it to take effect.

A more convenient way to activate it:

1. Click to enable dock corners
2. When Script Editor opens, click the green run button

Click Disable dock corners to disable it again.

Sadly this doesn't work with multiple displays.
